September Wrap Up

Books I Read This Month

This month was amazing because there were a bunch of new releases, most of which I had preordered online so I was constantly getting treats in the mail. One I’m still reading and another hasn’t arrived yet because it was just released the other day so I’m hoping it will arrive next week. Anyway, here are the six books I read this month, including the four new releases…

The first book I read in September was King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard. This is the third book in the Red Queen series, which I love. Glass Sword was kind of a let down to be honest. I didn’t hate it but it was pretty dull until the last hundred pages or so. But King’s Cage has put the series back on track. The fourth and final book in the series, War Storm, comes out in 2018 and I’m pumped for it after the ending of King’s Cage.

The second book I read was the first of the September releases and the one I was the most keen for: Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas. This is the sixth book in the Throne of Glass series which is one of my all-time favourite series’. This book was easily one of the best. It’s tied for second place on my personal ranking alongside Empire of Storms, second only to Queen of Shadows. Even though Aelin wasn’t in it, this book advances the overall plot of the series. It isn’t just some money grab- there are major revelations about the Valg and the Fae and huge character developments for Chaol.

The next book I read was Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart. This is by the author of the very popular book We Were Liars. I wouldn’t say this book is better, but it’s definitely worth reading. It’s told in reverse order and you piece together more of this great mystery story about identity theft as you read it. I have a full spoiler-free review which you can check out here.

Next I read Warcross by Marie Lu. This book was so fun and exciting. It was about a virtual reality game called Warcross and a girl who hacks her way into the game and ends up becoming an undercover contestant on a mission to find someone who is messing around with the game. I loved this book so much and I did a full review on it if you want to know why which you can read here.

The next book I read was They Both Die In The End by Adam Silvera. It’s set in a world where everyone receives a phone call on the day they’re going to die, and follows the story of two teenagers who try to live their last day to the fullest. This was such a great book and I highly recommend it to young adult readers. But beware, as you can tell from the title, this book does not have a happy ending. You can read my full review here.

The last book I finished reading this month All Rights Reserved by Gregory Scott Katsoulis. I don’t know for sure how I feel about this one. One one hand, the plot is really cool. It’s set in a dystopian world where everything you say costs money. The main character decides to stop speaking, and inadvertently starts a revolution as others begin to follow. It’s really awesome, but on the other hand, there’s lot of legal and technical stuff that made the world confusing and distracted from the story. I’m going to write a review for this in the coming weeks once I’ve thought about it more.

The September Releases

So next month is going to be very big for Young Adult readers. If you know a lot about publishing, you’ll know that September is the month that a lot of publishers like to bring out their big releases. The main reason for this is that September leaves a good amount of time for the book to generate a lot of buzz before the Christmas shopping season. Every year there are a lot of big YA releases in September, and this year I’m super excited for 6 of them and have already put in my preorders, so I wanted to list them here.

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J Maas – September 5

This is the one I’m most excited for. It’s the sixth book (or seventh if you count the prequel novella bind-up) of the very well-known Throne of Glass series. This book is a side story though, it follows one of the main characters, Chaol Westfall, on his journey to the Southern Continent, which is where we last saw him set out for at the end of book 4, Queen of Shadows. But the series’ main protagonist won’t be in this book and the cliffhangers that we were left with after book five will not be dealt with until the seventh and final book is released next year. Still, Chaol is one of my favourite characters in the series, I love this world and this story so much, and everything Sarah J Maas writes is pure gold.

Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart – September 5

E. Lockhart is the author of the very popular book, We Were Liars. I loved that book so much, and the premise of this one sounds cool too, so I’m looking forward to reading it. Genuine Fraud follows the story of Imogen and Jule, two people who both are in desperate need for a new life, end up meeting, and things turn dark from there. It’s a very vague description but like with We Were Liars, that’s the best way to go into an E. Lockhart book because they’re very short and hard to explain without giving too much away.

They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera – September 5

I’ve never read an Adam Silvera book but I’ve wanted to for some time, and when I heard about this one I knew I’d have to read it as soon as it comes out. This book is set in a world where on the day you’re going to die, you receive a phone call letting you know that it’s going to happen. There is an app you can go on to meet other people who will also be dying on this day, and They Both Die At The End is about two teenagers who meet through this app and spend their last day together. I have a bad feeling that the ending of this book will destroy me, but I’m keen for it nonetheless.

Warcross by Marie Lu – September 12

After Tower of Dawn, this is the book I’m second-most excited for. Warcross is a science fiction book set in the future, and there’s this virtual reality game called Warcross that has become a huge obsession for so many people. The protagonist of this book works as an illegal bounty hunter in the game. Her identity ends up being exposed, and she fears being arrested, but instead, the creator of Warcross hires her to be a spy during the game’s annual tournament, going up against other contestants while trying to uncover a conspiracy. This is going to be the first book in a series, and I can’t wait to dive in.

Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu – September 19

This is a contemporary novel about a girl named Vivian who is fed up with how sexist her high school is. The football team are the do-no-wrong stars of the school, there are double standards with dress codes, and the faculty are doing nothing to stop the guys who are calling out sexist slurs. So she creates a feminist zine called Moxie and distributes it anonymously, and it ends up taking the school by storm. I’m so keen for this book, and I think it’s a book the world needs right now – especially for young girls who high school who need something like this they can look to.

There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins – September 26

This one is something I’m looking forward to because it’s horror and that’s not something I’ve read a lot of. It’s about a girl named Makani whose classmates end up being murdered one by one with each murder becoming gorier. It’s said to be mysterious, thrilling, and heart-stopping so I look forward to reading this in early October to get me in the mood for Halloween.

That’s it for the books that I am going to be reading when they come out in September, and I intend to do spoiler-free reviews for each of them, but there are heaps more that are coming that know are being hyped up, and I’m going to list them below even though I don’t have interest in reading them anytime soon. And beyond this list, there’s probably a bunch more so make sure you start saving up for all of these great releases that we’ll be getting next month…
